Eaton FERRUPS — Service, Battery & Migration Canada

⚠ Legacy industrial — FE series approaching EOSL 2027

Eaton FERRUPS —
Service, Battery & Migration Canada

The Eaton FERRUPS (Ferroresonant UPS) is a legacy industrial-grade UPS using ferroresonant transformer technology for extreme load tolerance. The FE series (500 VA to 18 kVA) reaches end of support life in 2027. The FX series is already retired. Deployed in Canadian industrial, oil & gas, mining, and broadcast facilities where load harmonics and power quality challenges make conventional UPS unreliable. We provide battery replacement, transformer service, and migration planning.

⚠️ EOSL timeline: Eaton FERRUPS FE series reaches end of support life in 2027. FX series is already retired. After EOSL, Eaton will no longer provide OEM service or parts. We will continue to service FERRUPS units through our independent supply chain, but parts availability will become increasingly limited. If you operate FERRUPS units, begin migration planning now.

What we can service on FERRUPS

🔋 Battery + Ferroresonant Transformer

FERRUPS units have two critical service components: the battery bank (standard VRLA, 3–5 year life) and the ferroresonant transformer (typically 15–20+ year life but requires inspection for insulation degradation and thermal damage).

  • Battery replacement — internal VRLA + extended cabinet cells
  • Transformer inspection — insulation resistance, thermal imaging, winding integrity
  • Capacitor bank — resonance capacitors are critical; degradation causes output instability
  • Fan and cooling — ferroresonant transformers generate significant heat
  • Control board diagnostics — limited parts availability post-2027

Migration Paths

Replacing the FERRUPS post-2027

Important: FERRUPS loads are often non-linear with high crest factors. Not all conventional UPS platforms handle these loads well. We analyse your specific load profile before recommending a replacement to ensure compatibility.

FAQ

Eaton FERRUPS questions

What makes FERRUPS different from a conventional UPS?
FERRUPS uses a ferroresonant transformer instead of conventional double-conversion electronics. This provides inherent voltage regulation, full galvanic isolation, and exceptional tolerance for non-linear, high-crest-factor loads. Industrial equipment like variable frequency drives (VFDs), welders, and broadcast transmitters can damage conventional UPS but the FERRUPS handles them without issue. The trade-off is lower efficiency and higher heat output.
What happens when FERRUPS reaches EOSL in 2027?
After EOSL, Eaton will no longer provide OEM parts or service. We will continue servicing FERRUPS units through independent parts channels, but control boards and proprietary components will become increasingly scarce. Battery replacement will remain feasible for years beyond EOSL. For units in critical applications, we recommend beginning migration planning now — replacement projects for industrial UPS typically take 6–12 months to specify, procure, and install.
Can I replace FERRUPS with a standard 9PX?
It depends on your load. If your load is standard IT equipment (servers, networking), a 9PX is a straightforward replacement. If your load has high crest factors, significant harmonics, or non-linear characteristics (VFDs, compressors, broadcast), a standard online UPS may not perform well. We analyse your specific load profile with harmonic measurements before recommending a replacement platform.
How often should FERRUPS batteries be replaced?
Same as any VRLA-based UPS: 3–5 years depending on temperature and discharge frequency. The ferroresonant transformer itself can last 15–20+ years with proper thermal management. The resonance capacitor bank should be tested every 5 years and replaced if degradation is detected.
Do you service FERRUPS in oil & gas and mining facilities?
Yes. FERRUPS is particularly common in Canadian oil & gas (Alberta, Saskatchewan), mining operations, and broadcast facilities. We service these installations across Western Canada with priority dispatch. For remote sites, we coordinate travel and parts staging to minimize on-site time.
