How an online unit protects the load

Eaton 9SX questions
Eaton 9SX vs 9PX, what is the difference?
Same online double-conversion topology, same ABM battery management, same efficiency. The key difference is form factor: the 9SX is designed as a tower unit (floor-standing), while the 9PX is designed as a rack-mount unit (2U, convertible to tower). If your deployment is rack-based, choose the 9PX. If it’s floor-standing or beside equipment, the 9SX is the better fit.
Can I replace the 9SX battery without shutting down?
Yes. Eaton’s 9SX manual says the batteries can be replaced without turning off the UPS or disconnecting the load, and warns not to disconnect them while the UPS is in Battery mode. The swap is not done on bypass: in Bypass mode, Eaton says, the equipment is not protected (see Eaton UPS on bypass: what it means and what to check). The manual asks for qualified service personnel knowledgeable of batteries.
Is the 9SX suitable for a hospital environment?
Yes. The 9SX tower form factor is commonly deployed beside medical devices, in hospital bedside applications, and in lab environments where rack infrastructure doesn’t exist. The online double-conversion topology provides the zero-transfer-time protection required for sensitive medical equipment.
Can I add extended runtime to the 9SX?
Yes. The 9SX supports External Battery Modules (EBMs) connected to the rear panel. Each EBM adds approximately 10 to 20 minutes of runtime at half load. Up to 4 EBMs can be stacked vertically beside the main unit.
What warranty does the 9SX come with?
Warranty terms come from Eaton for each purchase; check them for your serial number. Eaton’s 9SX manual notes that the warranty is void if deep discharge protection is disabled.
